We’re excited to share the newest addition to the miniPCR Digital library: the Lemur Digital Lab. Adapted from our popular hands-on Conservation Genetics Lab and based on research by Duke Lemur Center scientists, this online simulation brings authentic conservation research into the classroom by inviting students to solve a real-world mystery: could a lemur species thought to be extinct still persist in the wild?

This virtual lab follows field biologists as they research wild lemur populations in Madagascar. Students compare morphological observations and DNA analysis to determine species identity, then investigate changes in a wild lemur population.

The Lemur Digital Lab covers essential genetics and ecology topics, including:

- Conservation genetics: Using DNA data to identify species and understand population relationships. - Biodiversity and species identification: Investigating whether a population represents a species thought to be extinct. - Population ecology: Analyzing changes in population size and distribution over time.

As they progress through the simulation, students experience science as it happens in the real world. Videos featuring one of the scientists behind the research guide the investigation, while interactive data analysis activities help students analyze DNA sequences, track population trends, and interpret animal behavior. By working with authentic field datasets, students practice the skills scientists use to answer questions about biodiversity and conservation.

The Lemur Digital Lab takes just 45 minutes and is designed for flexible use. It works well:

- When time or resources are limited. Give students an authentic conservation research experience without access to field sites or laboratory equipment. - Alongside the hands-on lab. Use it to prepare students to complete the hands-on Conservation Genetics Lab or to reinforce key concepts afterward. - As a make-up assignment. Students who miss class can still explore genetics and ecology through a meaningful, self-paced experience.

Ready to investigate? Try the Lemur Digital Lab today and bring authentic research to your students! Preview the curriculum by setting up a free teacher account at miniPCR Digital, or purchase a license to assign the lab to your students.
